Prejudice is buried

We don’t want to acknowledge how prejudiced we are, our internal racism. This Scientific American story is great. Most people don’t realize the depth of their own prejudice. As a Mississippian by cultural acretion, I know that better than most. We are the problem. It’s not them or those people. The difference between a Mississippi racist and a California racist is that Mississippi racists don’t lie. I love the scientific verification of something I have found to be true and come to believe. It’s the next best thing to being right.

The takeaway: “the people who are best at inhibiting implicit stereotypes are those who are especially skilled at detecting mismatches between their intentions and their actions.” Which is what four years working with Valerie Batts at Visions taught me.
