The BwB deal

it was really interesting figuring out how to help them get the mix of mission and milestone right to both grow but have a big impact. we restructured their whole model and made it make much more sense to them, from a percentage of donation point of view. they get a discount on cost of goods compared to other used book dealers because people give them their books. what is that cost reduction compared to industry averages? that should be their off the top donation percentage; they got them cheaply because people saw the value of contributing used text books to literacy groups worldwide and in the u.s. so that’s a philanthropic cost added to the product cost, if you will, that makes the books, both mission and milestone, balance. Tim and I are working on how to encapsulate a clear expression of the value we helped them arrive at, and the value they gave back to the world, through their topline donation. we still don’t quite have the language flowing. it’s a deep story that i think we can make simple.
