First ever Hindu chaplain in the U.S. Senate runs into Christian Right activists, who think his presence is an abomination. The fear behind fundamentalism is a real one, imho; many things in our culture are, indeed, falling apart. Their response of exclusion and reversion to an older, imagined world where there were fewer options is a response that makes things worse because it restricts freedom. But as Steve Earle’s John Walker Blues points out, that kind of narrowing down can seem like the only way forward.
